Dan Aronson is a rabbi, chaplain and educator in Houston, TX, currently serving Temple Beth Torah in Humble, TX, as its Hebrew coordinator. At the same time, he enjoys serving as assistant lead in the educational books and toys department at Whole Earth Provision Co. Additionally, since moving from Philadelphia with his family in 2013, Dan has been a chaplaincy resident at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, the short-term interim executive director of the Texas A&M Hillel, the b’nai mitzvah coordinator at Congregation Emanu El, and the director of youth and education at Congregation Or Ami. He also has been an instructor for Houston’s Kehillah High and the Florence Melton Adult Jewish Learning program of Houston’s ERJCC. Other contributions Dan has made to the Houston Jewish community have included leading junior congregation services at Congregation Brith Shalom, providing rabbinic support to Kol HaLev, Houston’s Reconstructionist havurah, volunteering for Jewish Family Service and speaking out on behalf of workers’ rights for the Interfaith Worker Center.
Among other positions he has held elsewhere have been rabbi at Temple Beth Sholom in Salem, OR, director of congregational learning at Ohev Shalom of Bucks County in Richboro, PA, director of annual giving and special events and dean of admissions and recruitment at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, PA, and assistant director of the Brown-RISD Hillel Foundation in Providence, RI. Dan has also served congregations as an interim rabbi, taught children and adults, and done additional work tutoring, officiating at life cycle events and providing pastoral care.
Dan is especially excited about teaching Bibliodrama, a form of Torah study that asks participants to step into the shoes of our biblical ancestors and personalize their stories. He was fortunate to study with the founders of Bibliodrama, Dr. Peter and Susan Pitzele.
An alumnus of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship, Dan holds degrees from Brown University (AB in Judaic Studies), Brandeis University (MA in Jewish Communal Service), the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (MHL and Rabbinic Ordination) and the Davidson School of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary (MA in Jewish Education).
Rabbi Aronson was born and raised in Portland, ME. He lives with his wife Beth, their daughter Katie, two cats and two geckos. Dan’s son Jacob lives in Richmond, VA.
