Dan Aronson is a chaplain, educator and rabbi in Houston, TX, currently serving University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as a chaplain resident and Temple Beth Torah as its Hebrew coordinator. Prior to returning to pastoral care, which was his specialization in rabbinical school, Dan served the Texas A&M Hillel as its short-term interim executive director, Congregation Or Ami as its director of youth and education and Congretion Emanu El as its b’nai mitzvah coordinator. In addition, he is an instructor for Houston’s Kehillah High and the Florence Melton Adult Jewish Learning program of Houston’s ERJCC. Other contributions Dan has made to the Houston Jewish community have included leading junior congregation services at Congregation Brith Shalom, providing rabbinic support to Kol HaLev, Houston’s Reconstructionist havurah, volunteering for Jewish Family Service and speaking out on behalf of workers’ rights for the Interfaith Worker Center.
Among other positions he has held have been rabbi at Temple Beth Sholom in Salem, OR; director of congregational learning at Ohev Shalom of Bucks County in Richboro, PA; director of annual giving and special events and then dean of admissions and recruitment at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, PA; and assistant director of the Brown-RISD Hillel Foundation in Providence, RI. Dan has also served congregations as an interim rabbi, taught children and adults, and done additional work tutoring, officiating at life cycle events and providing pastoral care.
Dan is especially excited about Bibliodrama, a form of Torah study that asks participants to step into the shoes of our biblical ancestors and personalize their stories. He was fortunate to study with the founders of Bibliodrama, Dr. Peter and Susan Pitzele.
Dan holds degrees from Brown University (AB in Judaic Studies), Brandeis University (MA in Jewish Communal Service), and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (MHL and Rabbinic Ordination) and is an alumnus of the Wexner Graduate Fellowship program. Rabbi Aronson also earned certification in Bibliodrama from Dr. Peter Pitzele. He will complete his fourth unit of Clinical Pastoral Education around the time he also completes his studies toward an MA in Jewish Education through the Davidson School of Jewish Education of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
